ICSD Asia Branch
International Consortium for Social Development ASIA
The theme of the inaugural conference is “Globalization, Development and Human Security in the Asia-Pacific
Region”. Like other regions of the world, the Asia-Pacific region is experiencing significant social, economic and
political challenges and changes that may enhance or diminish wellbeing of people and communities. The conference
aims to address one fundamental question: What is the role of globalization and development in ensuring human
security in the region?
Despite the unprecedented rate of globalization, growth and development, the region is
confronted by major socio-economic problems such as extreme poverty, unemployment, inadequate or poor housing
conditions, social exclusion, disorder and violence, illiteracy and lack of education, poor health, gender inequality,
environmental unsustainability, etc.
However, there is hope that the region also presents good examples that suggest
effectiveness of alternative social development approaches that are empowering, inclusive and participatory, and
that enhance human security, particularly of disadvantaged and marginalized groups. The conference will facilitate
a deeper intra-regional analysis and understanding of these issues and alternative processes within the context of
globalization and development in the Asia-Pacific region.
